New Attack!

So it was time we gave the token a good purpose! We made it so that if you collect all 25 tokens in the level, you get a new attack. It was my task to draw the new attack.

I first went for an electrical sphere with an aesthetic similar to the other attack.

Here is the animation:

I thought it looked ugly as so I decided to change it. I went for just a normal sphere.

Lightnings didn't look right

Nice : )

My group liked it but they suggested an attack that was unique and much different to the other one. So I made a lightning bolt.

However, the coding became a bit confusing and we weren't able to add this one in on time. So we used the other one I did but Mohsin made it so that it kills two robots with one bullet.

Sliding

Tutors suggested a sliding animation so that the fox didn't look too static when it was sliding after a run. I took some inspiration a made a little animation for it. I attempted adding some dust effects and I think it worked well.

Inspiration

I also moved his fur slightly to give him more of a motion feel

Arms Crossed

New animation on the way! I decided to create an animation where the fox crosses its arms after successfully finished the level. Here it is:

I had to look for examples because I was struggling to understand how your arms actually look when they are crossed and how they are positioned exactly. This picture really helped me out.

Then I attempted to create in-between frames from Idle to Arms fully crossed.

Animation:

I also added a little bounce to his arms after he crosses them, leaving the left hand static. I also had a little blink on this one again because I thought, why not, would look cool.

Birds and Leaves

So I animated some more stuff. Warren drew a flying bird in  4 or 5 different frames and I just put it together, so I can't take much credit for it but I'll display it anyway.

Warren also drew leaves for the scenario, but this time animation was much harder and time consuming.

My idea was to draw a path for each leaf and repeat it several times with slight rotations.

Here is my animation's development:

Started with one leaf

Applied same pattern to every leaf but randomized, of course.

Target

I figured that the tutorial level could also have a little target that you can shoot for training purposes. So I decided to draw a little robotic dude to add more to the level. I drew it, refined it and animated it all myself and it turned out pretty cool :)

My very basic development, haha. I came up with the idea of adding a solar pad on his back to match the context of the game.

Then I started sketching it on Illustrator

Started adding more details and gradients.

And then I put it into photoshop and gave it some nice glows and some shadow work.

Next step was animating:

I kinda copied the movement style for the robots since this one is floating as well. Then I just moved is body as well as two different parts connected by these pipes.

After that I just added the rings motion and a fade in/out for the target aim

Tutorial Level

My next task was making a Tutorial Level. It was Warren's task but he had heaps to do, and it could be simple, so I did it. I played around with photoshop and illustrator and worked with glowing lines. Looks pretty simple, but took me a while, haha, maybe I'm just slow.

All I did was one asset that could be repeat in different sizes and one background, I made them in these colours first but the grey just looked like a faded black.

So I changed it to a more defining black.

Idle Animation

So yeah, characters that are static when Idle look lame. Due to this, I decided to make an Idle animation for the fox. Here is my little development:

This was my first attempt. I really struggled with understanding what movement you do when you are just still breathing. I tried a little chest and shoulders movement, but it still looks static and lame.

Then after that I went for forearms, arms , shoulders and after playing around with it I started getting somewhere. I also added a little blink as a nice touch :) However, I still thought there was something off. And I figured it out! The head wasn't moving.
